How much does air conditioning cost in the UK?
Short answer first: a single-room system fitted in the UK typically costs £2,100–£2,600, and a two-to-three room system typically costs £3,900–£5,000. Ducted or larger whole-home systems run higher. All of those figures should already include the unit, installation, and VAT: if a quote doesn’t say “fitted, inc. VAT”, ask what’s missing.
What you’re actually paying for
A fixed air conditioning price covers four things: the indoor unit (or units), the outdoor unit, the pipework and wiring connecting them, and the engineer’s time to fit it safely and legally. It should also include the F-Gas handling of refrigerant, which only certified engineers are allowed to do.
Why prices vary so much
Three things move the price more than anything else:
- Number of rooms. A single indoor unit paired with one outdoor unit (a “single split”) is the cheapest configuration. Cooling two or three rooms from one outdoor unit (a “multi-split”) costs more per room than a single split, but less than fitting separate systems.
- Distance between units. Most quotes include a set run of pipework (commonly 3–5 metres) between the indoor and outdoor unit. Longer runs, or routes that need to go through multiple walls or floors, add cost.
- Where the outdoor unit goes. Ground-mounted is usually simplest. Wall-mounted at height, or anywhere needing scaffolding or a cherry picker, costs more in labour.
Our own pricing, for reference
Airsmith prices three tiers as a starting point:
| System | Typical use | Fitted price |
|---|---|---|
| Airsmith One (2.5kW) | Bedroom, home office, loft conversion | £2,185 |
| Airsmith Duo (5.0kW) | Two rooms, one outdoor unit | £3,985 |
| Airsmith Whole Home (7.1kW) | Three rooms or more | £4,935 |
Those are cooling-only prices; running the same systems in heating mode as well typically adds a modest amount, because the installation itself doesn’t change: only the indoor unit’s control settings do.
Getting an accurate price without a sales visit
The only way to give you a genuinely fixed price is to ask about your specific rooms, ceiling height, and where the outdoor unit can realistically go, which is exactly what our online quote does in about two minutes, with no obligation and no salesperson involved.
